to renew the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and India. ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: Council may adopt the act only if Parliament has given its consent to the act. BACKGROUND: the Agreement on scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and India was signed in New Delhi on 23 November 2001. This Agreement stipulates that it shall be concluded for an initial period of five years and may be renewed by mutual agreement between the Parties after evaluation during the last year of each successive period. PURPOSE: to renew the Agreement on cooperation in science and technology between the European Community and India. BACKGROUND: by Decision 2002/648/EC , the Council approved the conclusion of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and India. By its Decision 2009/501/EC , the Council renewed the Agreement for a further period of five years and is due to expire on 17 May 2015. The Parties to the Agreement consider that a rapid renewal of the Agreement would be in their mutual interest. CONTENT: this proposal called on the Council to renew the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and India, for an additional period of five years. The content of the renewed Agreement is identical to the content of the Agreement in force. For further details of the financial impact of the Agreement on the Union’s budget, please refer to the Commission’s initial legislative procedure dated 29 October 2014 . The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy adopted the report by Jerzy BUZEK (EPP, PL) on the draft Council decision concerning the renewal of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and the Government of the Republic of India. The committee recommended the European Parliament to give its consent to the renewal of the agreement. The European Parliament adopted by 639 votes to 48, with 12 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the draft Council decision concerning the renewal of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and the Government of the Republic of India. Following the recommendation from the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, Parliament gave its consent to the conclusion of the Agreement. NON-LEGISLATIVE ACT: Council Decision (EU) 2015/1788 concerning the renewal of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and the Government of the Republic of India. CONTENT: under this Council Decision, the renewal of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community (now the European Union) and the Government of the Republic of India, for an additional period of 5 years , is hereby approved on behalf of the European Union. To recall, by Decision 2002/648/EC , the Council approved the conclusion of the Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and the Government of the Republic of India.
